Among the mosques built in the twentieth century, the most modern, largest and most attractive mosque is the Baitul Mukarram Mosque situated in the vicinity of old Paltan and Gulistan. This mosque has been built to follow Kaaba Sharif of Mecca. On 7 January 1960, Pakistan's President Ayub Khan laid the foundation stone of the mosque. The design of the mosque complex was designed by the renowned architect Abul Isain Thiarani. The first congregation was held on Friday 25 January 1963 in the mosque. The 8-storey Mosque complex is built on 8.30 acres of land. The main part of the mosque is 60,000 square feet. This is the national mosque of Bangladesh.
